Area Businesses Supported 1954 Manitou Play
Manitou High School’s 1954 junior and senior classes presented an annual play on April 16 that year titled “The Custer’s Last Stand”. It was a fun production about a fictional Custer family. Several skits were also part of the entertainment that evening.
The annual junior-senior play was a fundraiser. Students sold ads for the play’s program to businesses and individuals in Manitou, Frederick, Tipton and Snyder. From the perspective of 2010 – 56 years later – listing of those businesses is a nostalgic reminder that the area communities were active, thriving places.
The play’s eight-page program contained 134 sponsorship ads! Businesses included all kinds of enterprises, including many gasoline service stations, grocery stores, and auto dealerships.
